What is Canine Good Citizen?

The American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program recognizes dogs that demonstrate responsible ownership and good manners through a practical, 10-skill test. Both purebred and mixed-breed dogs may participate.

At Maximus K9, our one-on-one training can help you practice core CGC skills. When your dog is ready, contact us to discuss an evaluation with approved evaluator Alex Cox.

The 10 CGC test skills

  1. Accepting a friendly stranger
  2. Sitting politely for petting
  3. Appearance and grooming
  4. Walking calmly on a loose leash
  5. Walking through a crowd
  6. Sit, down, and stay in place
  7. Coming when called
  8. Staying polite around another dog
  9. Responding calmly to distractions
  10. Supervised separation from the handler

See the official AKC CGC test items and requirements for the full rules. Training prepares dogs for the evaluation; passing is not guaranteed.

How to get started

Tell us about your dog’s age, current training, and goals. We can discuss whether your dog would benefit from private training before attempting the CGC test or whether you’re ready to ask about evaluation scheduling.
